My doctor told me my pap test was abnormal…Can this indicate uterine cancer? I'm asking because uterine cancer runs in my family & this is what I'm the MOST worried about is uterine cancer not cervical..Thx
Answer:
An abnormal pap can indicate anything from having douched too close to your test, to having sex too close to your test, to having your test done too close to the start/end of your period, to an infection, to…..
The point is that there are MANY reasons besides cancer why a pap might have come back abnormal. And uterine cancer is determined by means other than pap's (usually endometrial biopsy based on other factors).
But DO tell your doctor (if you've not done so already) that you have a family history of uterine cancer.
The first step is to repeat the pap. If that one comes back abnormal, then they'll send you off for some biopsies.
The good news is that 1/2 the time the second test usually comes back ok, and IF you do have abnormal growths, they're slow. The first indicator is usually a condition called "dysplasia" and it takes a considerable amount of time for cancer to actually form from dysplasia.
So don't freak out too badly, until you get to the point where your biopsies come back and they tell you that you need more treatment.
Answer:
Abnormal Pap smear results are often explained by an infection or an inflammation. Yeast infections, herpes, trichomonas, recent sexual activity, or use of vaginal preparations, are often things which cause an abnormal Pap smear result. Many times the culprit is HPV or human papilloma virus.
Also, just because your family has a history of uterine cancer doesn't mean that it's the only type of cancer you can get. The Pap doesn't look at the uterus. It's only looking at your cervical cells.

Hi, I had an abnormal pap before too. It turns out that I had sex the night before, and my cervix was a bit swollen. I returned a week later and my pap was normal and has been ever since.
I assume he has you scheduled for another pap test. Do NOT worry until you know that there is something to worry about. I have friends and my sister as well that had an abnormal pap and there was nothing to worry about. This is pretty common.
IF there is something to worry about, you are young and medicine has improved so much over the years that you'll get through this. You should have the test for the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, since there is cancer in your family.
Good luck and don't stress!
Answer:
Dont be too worried yet. Did your doctor ask you to come back in for another test yet? If not you need to make one.
A pap can come back abnormal for many reasons.
1) bladder infection
2)yeast infection
3) if you had sex prior to your doctors appt.
There are many resons. Dont freak yourself out. Just make another appointment.
Good luck.

Ummm…. in many cases yes, but many no. Sometimes this abnormal indication is just cyst or a small tumor, but nothing serious as cancer. It is said, that, most of the time an abnormal pap smear indicates minor problems with the cervix that may or may not need treatment.
Answer:
You could have just abnormal cells which indicate an infection … retest is probably what they will do…you will be fine…
