Hi everyone, first I would like to thank anyone who replies with a detailed and non-rude message. I am here for advise, not to be criticized. This is my first question on Yahoo! Answers, so please, bear with me.
Here’s my story:
I’m an 18 year old female, very healthy (from what I know) and I live in the United Says. I am on an anti-depressant, called Paxil, for major panic attacks and thankfully, it helps me wonders. A few years ago, my EX boyfriend felt a lump on the front of my neck. I was concerned, but over time, I forgot about the mass and went on with my life. Currently, as of late last year, I decided to tough it up and go to the doctors about it. They took several blood tests and a couple of ultrasounds of this mysterious mass. This is some information that the doctors found out about it:
- It is on my thyroid
- It is a liquid filled cyst, with a possible 9mm hard spot
- It is movable
- It is very firm, but not quite hard
- I have had it for over 3 years
- I have no symptoms and it causes no anguish
- It is just about 2 inches huge, which I guess is considered huge
- All blood tests came out normal
- The cyst didn’t grow, at all, during the 3 month wait for the second ultrasound.
Well, that’s about all we know about the cyst, so far. I get a biopsy next month, some time. I’m doing this all without insurance, too. No worries, I am working on getting insurance as we speak. Okay, so here are my questions:
- Do you think it is cancer and if so, what are the odds?
- Do you think I waited too long and if so, do you think it can be cured if it is cancer, or do you think it is too late?
- Has anyone ever been through this before and if so, I would love your advise.
Over-all, to be quite honest, I am scared out of my mind. I do not want to die from this. I want to have a long and happy life with my son and my boyfriend. I’m sorry that this question is so long, I just thought it would be better if I put as much details as possible. I hope I didn't forget anything.
Thank you.

Hi ???
Welcome to the forum!
Right, let's get you sorted out.
From what you say it sounds absolutely benign darling.
By now you would have had symptoms which you don't mention such as swallowing difficulties, hoarseness, difficulty in breathing, it would be fixed and solid, plus most malignant thyroid cancers are in males.
It is actually extremely common in girls your age to develop lumps around the thyroid area for some reason.
Please feel free to email me if I can be of any further help to you.

All cancers can be cured if you start early enough.
Since you have plenty of time, explore the links below.
Use Google to verify the data.

You’re taking the right steps. Have the biopsy, get the results and then plan you next steps with the physician. There is a good chance that it a non cancerous cyst. Don't get you self all worried and worked up until you have information. I know it is hard waiting but you need information and data first.
Thyroid cancer is very treatable. Ussually surgery then radiation. The thyroid cell is the only cell that attracts iodine so they give you radioactive iodine that kills all the thyroid cells in the the body, normal and cancerous.
They have the ability to also do a radiation iodine scan to check for other tumors. Thyroid cancer is generally curable.
But before you worry about all that, get the biopsy and the results
good luck

You've already asked this question. If drs were concerned that it was cancerous, they would've rescheduled you for more follow ups. 9 mm isn’t anywhere near 2 inches; it's quite small. You’ll be fine. If it was cancer and you've waited 3 years it would've spread by now. If by some massive fluke it is cancerous, thyroid cancer is very curable. Insurance will be very hard to get since you have a preexisting condition.

Im not trying to be rude but you have already asked this question I know because I have answered it as you can see most people including myself feel that its probably not cancer cause if the doctors felt it was they would have most likely done the biopsy right away and not wait a month and if you are really worried then push the doctors to do the biopsy right away its your health but either way it does not sound like cancer.
Answer:
I think that it was something to be concerned about your doctor would have done a biopsy immediately!
It could be just a benign cyst (you said your ex-felt it a few years ago) and it seems to be (stay) the same size right? and you’ve no discomfort either…. Your blood results came back normal!
Don't be afraid to ask your physician questions… Hopefully the biopsy will say that it's jsut a benign cyst which are common!
Ideal of Luck!

“Cystic lesions of the thyroid are common. Most are benign nodules with degenerative changes in a multinodular goiter. Fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) specimens from these cystic nodules usually are easily interpreted as benign”

I know from experience that no amount of positive thoughts sent your way are going to completely ease the fear that you feel. You cannot think this one away - but rest assured that worrying about it will ONLY make things worse. It will make you feel worse and IF you have cancer, any stress will only make it more aggravated.
I have personally had quite a few masses like you've described - 2 in my neck, one in my wrist and i currently have one on the backside of my knee and one in each kidney - NO CANCER! yea
But with my family history of cancer, I had to have a biopsy on a lump in my breast two years ago and I can understand your concern - that is the scariest thing ever, waiting for the biopsy and then waiting for the results. Just know that drs are very careful and most biopsys [that are performed all day every day, by the way] come out benign, meaning non-cancerous. Waiting for the biopsy and waiting for the results of that biopsy, which don't come immediately, can be utter hell.
Just so you know, if your physicians were really concerned, they would have scheduled you for an immediate biopsy. The fact that they scheduled it so far out should really comfort you and help you know that your cyst isn’t behaving in any way like a cancerous one would and therefore they haven't put you at the top of the priority list. That's a great thing!
You’ll be fine, I'm certain of it. Don't let negative scenarios and thinking get the ideal of you - I know how much that’s easier said than done but stress CAUSES illness and positive attitudes can truly cure them!
Good luck and keep your head up ![]()

As the two previous respondents stated…you've already asked this question and I've already answered it so I feel no need to do so again. I only wanted to address/correct what one respondent said.
Mel said that most thyroid cancer occurs in males and this is completely incorrect. Thyroid cancer occurs in female patients more often than male at a ratio of 3 to 1. (although I don't believe you’ve cancer with the information you've provided.)
