Hello, I have a question. My mom has been diagnostic with acute myoblast leukemia after they said she had meningitis and they have started treatment with cytostatics (drugs that they usually use in case of leukemia) but she has gotten worse. She had a stroke (a heavy internal bleeding into her brain) and now she’s unconscious. She also have a low trombocytes (around 15000) so surgery is not an option at the moment they say… The internal bleeding was on the part of the brain that control the life functions so now she’s connected to the machines for breathing and her right side is paralyzed. I am wondering if u treat someone who does not have leukemia with chemo is the internal bleeding a possible result? And is it possible to do some surgery to relief the pressure on her brain?
sorry for the spelling

Paolo, I'm sorry to hear your mom is such bad condition. From the sounds of things, she was very ill to begin with. You really can't make a mistake diagnosing acute myoblastic leukemia. In fact, the leukemia is likely the reason why she has the low platelet count, and why she had the stroke. Her blood is not being formed correctly, and that affects all the blood cells, because they are all made in the same place, from the same basic cell. It's that basic cell formation that is the problem with the leukemia she has. Her problems are probably the result of the leukemia, not the drugs given to her to treat it. Cytostatic refers to how the drug works, not the type of drug it is. In this case, it's a kind of drug that will help stop the cancer from reproducing, but it doesn't actually kill the cancer cells themselves. This is probably because your mother is currently in such a serious condition, the usual chemotherapy would not help her any. From the sounds of things, your mother is in critical condition, and I hope you have your family gathered close by. If you have a spiritual advisor, it would be a good idea to have them close by as well. I wish I could say that things would improve, but in all honesty it doesn't look good at this point. Surgery with a low platelet count would certainly kill her, as she would bleed to death more than likely. At the moment, they can only try to keep her alive and hope the drugs will help stop the cancer getting worse until she is stronger and in better shape for the chemotherapy. The paralysis will be permanent, I'm afraid. If she stabilizes enough to breath on her own, and her platelet count improves, they may still yet be able to help her with chemotherapy. I'm sorry you must stand by and feel so helpless, so I hope you have plenty of people with you for support. This is a hard road you must walk, and it will be easiest if you have family to cling to.
