The connection between asbestos and respiratory diseases is known but is there a connection to other diseases? My dad worked in a shipyard for forty years. His company violated OSHA guidelines for decades. Daddy developed asbestosis and emphysema. Wives of shipyard workers have above average rates of cancer. Mother had cervical cancer and non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Is there a connection?
Answer:
there are some cancers, i believe mesothelioma and lung are the main ones, i doubt it caused the cervical cancer though and probably not the lymphoma.
Answer:
I don’t know about other diseases, but it does cause mesothelioma and this can occur in the lungs, the pleura, peritoneum and the testis.
One of the hospitals I work for is the closest to Los Angeles Harbor and there are several dock workers who live in the area. We’ve seen several wives and moms of the dock works with mesothelioma, but I haven’t seen a cervical cancer attributed to asbestos and I can’t recall a lymphoma either, but your mother’s oncologist would know if it is a possibility.
