i had 33 treatments of radiation for breast cancer. my first visit was probably the worst. it took around 2 hours for them to get me lined up and tattooed. i had also had chemo and a mastocemy with tram flap procedure. they also removed my auxiliary lymph nodes. this also made it painful raising my arm over my head. but compared to all the other i went through, it was just a walk in the park. hope your treatments go well. at the ending of treatments i did have blistering of the skin. it does somewhat make you tired. just wear loose clothing so that the clothes don't rub the area treated. things will be fine. keep your spirits up and you will do great. God Bless!

Answer:
I have recently had radiation therapy, 15 days in a row. it does not hurt at all. depending on how much you have to have, it can discolour the skin for a while, in the same way as sunburn does. It can make the skin dryer than normal, you can use aqueous cream to wash with and to moisturise as it causes no problems with the tender skin. If you have to have it where there is hair you most likely loose some hair there. usually you will go to the radiation dept for planning of your rads, maybe that is if you have to have more than one go like mine. either way it is painless and does not take very long.

above all please get well soon.

Answer:
My 95yo mother had to undergo treatment for skin cancers on her face (cheek) and the top of her head

it was 5 daily visits (weekdays)

by 3 weeks

I took her to these

it took about 15 minutes for each treatment

there were NO side effects

her skin after the "burn" phase was gone was like a babies

good luck and i hope yours turns out as well

Answer:
The machine makes the worst possible noise. Most places will allow a radio or cd player in the room (unfortunatly no Ipods though). I suggest you take advantage if they can leave a radio in there or play one over the speakers. I used light classical and Trans Siberian Orchestra.

I didnt have any skin effects, but a lot of people do get burns. I would suggest aloe and eucerin both to try to prevent some of that and also to help relieve if you do get burns. Just remember that the area has to be clean when you are actually receiving the radiation

Thank you for the question and double thanks to those that responded. I had my melanoma reoccur recently, did Interferon for 11 months. Surgery with in the next two weeks. My Oncologist stated that after surgery I may have to do radiation. I was really concerned about the side effects, since radiation doesn't work on melanoma well and just started doing my research on it..

Answer:
Jack is mistaken as to no pain. It depends on how long you have the radiation for. I had mine for 36 days (5 days a week) and the last few days the skin became discolored and it did begin to irritate me all the time. After it was complete the layer of skin was gone and what was left took awhile to heal. I had to wait 2 months for the surgery to yank out the tumor. It was like a very bad sunburn is the best I can describe it. Also my radiation treatments took about 20 minutes per session and no cd players etc were allowed as they would interfere with the machines. Good luck.

Answer:
Received 30 general radiation 125 gy , nine-point shots to the head. Followed by 6, 250 gy, nine-point, specific tumor origin shots. They formed a mask, and bolted my head to the table for each treatment session. and aligned machine for radiation shots. Each session, from time in door, to setup, to out the door was about 15 - 20 minute trip.Used product called aquaphor liberally as soon as each treament was completed, Highly recommended. in area of radiation shots. Lost about 80 percent of hair in that area. Very minor redness that usually went away over weekend (no treatments on weekends). First couple weeks after treatments, tired easily. Doc stated this was normal. It has been eight weeks out. Things are clicking along good.

Answer:
Depending on what type radiation that you have, the actual treatment is quite short, a few minutes, with a few minutes more to get set up. However, for the first treatments you might also have several CT scans to get tattoos so they can line up the X-rays. If you are antsy then I suggest you take a Valium for these set-up scans as this can take an hour or longer. Once you have the first treatment or two then the process becomes old habit and is over in about ten minutes per treatment. If you have over 20 treatments you can get sunburned but the nurse will tell you how best to treat this side effect. Radiation is much less scary than chemo in my opinion, with far fewer side effects generally speaking.

good luck
