My uncle has gone to hospital because his eyes and face went yellow (something to do with the liver) is it perilous? is he going to be ok? is it cureable?
Answer:
What your uncle has is jaundice and is cause by strain / damage to the liver. The damage might be caused by one of many things. The ideal place to be is in hospital as this can be investigated fully, the cause found and hopefully treated. The liver is an extraordinary organ and can regenerate and recover well. Unfortunately there are serious illnesses that can affect the liver as well as non serious ones and it is probably best being prepared for this as well.
Answer:
When our red blood cells die, part of them is
converted into a substance known as
bilirubin. This bilirubin is a pigment. It
is normally greenish/yellow brown in color.
If something blocks the flow of bile, of
which bilirubin is a part of the bile….it can
cause the bilirubin to back up in the liver
and go out into the blood. This gives the
skin and whites of the eyes and mucus
membrances a yellow color known as
jaundice. Since the bilirubin isn't reaching
the intestines flowing with the bile from the
liver….then the stool may turn a whitish gray color.
The build up of bilirubin in the blood,
besides turning the skin and eyes colored
yellow, can also deepen the urine in color
also. It can change from a light yellow
to darker yellow and to orange and a deep
brown depending on how much bilirubin
there’s in the blood. Jaundice is just
a symptom and of itself it isn’t harmful.
However, it does signify that there is
a problem either with the bile duct area,
gallbladder area, liver area, or even the
blood itself. If the red blood cells die off
too fast, it can cause this also.
If the patient just has inflammation of the
liver cells and the cause of this inflammation
is eliminated and he goes through treatment,
he might be able to reverse any damage that
is done. However, if the inflammation was
not treated or it is caused by something
that can not be stopped, it can lead to
cirrhosis of the liver and then is a progressive disease…the physicians can only
try to slow the progression down. Cirrhosis
is scar formation and death of the liver cells.
Things that can cause a problem with
the liver are alcohol consumption, chemical
exposure, medication toxification, fatty
liver, biliary problems, mushroom poisoning,
hereditary conditions, auto immune disease,
and a few other things.
I hope this has helped to answer your
questions.
