Just always be there to comfort and encourage her. Thats really the ideal thing you can do. She might be stressed out, exhausted, and busy.. so maybe help her study for tests or remind her about large assignments or just bring her a coffee and a donut in the morning. All the tiny things will add up.
I think the very ideal thing is just being there if she needs a hug or someone to talk to.

I'm sorry for your friend's mom. My aunt has cancer too. She is in the final stages of breast cancer. Use your words carefully. Of course you don't know how she feels and you don't know if it will be okay. Just let her know that you love her and that she is in your thoughts and prayers and to not hesitate if she needs anything.
