I found a lump in my left breast this morning, and it's pretty sore (the lump). I'm on Yaz (birth control) and I'll be going to the physician ASAP.
Is it breast cancer? Could it be an allergic reaction to something???
Please help, I'm freaking out.
Also, I've been on Yaz for about 7 months now.
Answer:
I could be a cyst. At 15, it's MOST LIKELY a cyst. Cysts aren't serious, but they can be painful. The cause is unknown, but even excess caffeine has been linked to a higher incidence of cysts. I wouldn't freak out too much.
Answer:
It's beyond unlikely.
Breast cancer is nearly unheard of in under 25s, and fewer than 0.1% of those diagnosed with it are under 30.
If you did have breast cancer your case would be written up in medical journals worldwide.
The American Cancer Society and other cancer organisations suggest that women start breast self examination at the age of 20.
Most breast lumps, even in women over 50 (80% of those diagnosed) aren't cancerous, and most cancerous breast lumps aren't painful - the majority of people diagnosed with breast cancer have felt no pain. Many women have naturally lumpy breasts.
Taking oral contraceptives causes a small increase in risk but the danger gradually returns to normal after you stop taking them.
Edit: Just to correct a bit of misinformation given here - breast cancer that 'runs in the family' is rare - only 5 - 10% of breast cancer cases are hereditary. Why DO people answer questions on important subjects like this when they don't know the facts??
Answer:
You can get breast cancer at any age but it has to run in your family it's rare to get breast cancer if it doesn't but when you go to the doctor they'll tell you.
