Was this elixir fatal to the patient as a means of assisted Suicide, or is it like a modern morphine pump to relieve pain?
Answer:
This treatment is no longer in use. The intent was definitely not one of assisting suicide but rather of relieving the great pain that many terminal patients experienced. It was an extremely potent concoction. In many cases, removing or greatly reducing the pain gave patients an opportunity to communicate with family members in their final days. Without this, communication would not have not been possible due to the extent of pain and nausea. Hope this helps.
