I found out recently that my grandma has breast cancer, I think, but she doesn't like to speak about it, apparently? So my mom isn't really too sure. (My grandma on my dad's side.) And I don't want to talk to my father… or to my grandma… about it. My mom's side has no history of breast cancer, though. Anyways, this kind of freaked me out. How likely is it that I will get breast cancer if my grandma has it? :(

Answer:
You have a one in eight chance of getting breast cancer if you are female.
Your risk will be about 20% higher with a family grandmother involved I believe.

If you do monthly breast exams and get a baseline mamogram in your twenties and when you are 40 and over a yearly one, you will increase your chance of catching anything very early, even if it does happen.

Their is much research that increasing your exercise and eating heathy with berries and milk and lots of vitamin D and tomatoes, and less red meat, with decrease your risks.

If you get it and catch it early their is a 100% cure rate for stage 0-1
a 92% 5year survival rate with stage 11A, and a 81% survival rate over 5 years with 11B.

So you can see, it is very important to be vigilant and do your self checks.

Do try and stay away from the pill if you can, as this can increase cancer risk.

Do not let yourself get to be overweight.

Do not smoke.

limit eating soy products as they have a lot of natural estrogen.

You can get genetic testing to see if you are at an increased risk, if you select. If you have no coverage this test can cost about 3,000.00.

I would not worry about it, we as women are all at risk and you are going to be more aware and do your checks because you’re concerned about it. You’re young and have loads of amunition to help. There has been tonnes of research done lately and they may even have a cure someday.

Hope this is comforting to you.
