Yes England isn’t Hitler's Germany and donations are, of course, voluntary. In answer to cunny's remark “are they mandatory anywhere in the world”? I'd be willing to bet that there are a number of countries in the world where if a guy in power needed your blood, he wouldn't say “please”.

Answer:
blood donors in the UK are volunteers. they get a little lie down, a cup of tea and biscuits, and after various numbers of donations they get a badge. Donations don't usually take place in hospitals though, more likely village halls and clinics.

Answer:
Voluntary. I'm off to give my next donation in a couple of weeks and yes, we get a lie down, a cup of tea and biscuits. We also get badges (I'm nearly due my silver for 25 donations). However, we also get the satisfaction of knowing that we’re helping someone.

Answer:
Voluntary and you don't get paid either like in some countries! There's also an outright ban on some people seen as 'high risk' from donating, like anyone that's ever had anal sex, which cuts the numbers of people who can donate even if they want to down.

Answer:
How can they be mandatory - it's a free country. Are they mandatory anywhere in the world?

Answer:
Voluntary.
